The Documento Nacional de Identidad (DNI) consists of 8 digits followed by a single letter check character (e.g. 12345678Z). The letter is calculated using the modulo-23 algorithm. Foreign residents use a NIE instead, which starts with X, Y, or Z followed by 7 digits and a letter.
How do Spanish postcodes work?
Spanish postal codes are 5 digits. The first 2 identify the province: 28 = Madrid, 08 = Barcelona, 41 = Seville, 46 = Valencia. Codes for the Canary Islands start with 35 (Las Palmas) and 38 (Santa Cruz de Tenerife).
What format are Spanish phone numbers?
Spanish numbers are always 9 digits. Landlines start with 9 (e.g. 91 for Madrid, 93 for Barcelona). Mobile numbers start with 6 or 7 (e.g. 612 345 678). Numbers starting with 800 are freephone; 900 are premium rate. The country code is +34.
